Security tightened at stock exchange following threat
Tuesday, September 9 2003 22:12 Hrs (IST)
Ahmedabad: Security has been beefed up at the Ahmedabad Stock Exchange (ASE) after an
anonymous letter in Gujarati claiming to be from the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) threatened that certain
important locations in the state, including the stock exchange and two prominent temples would be
attacked soon, source said on September 9.
Sources in the ASE said the letter that was received on September 5 said that LeT would attack
important places in Gujarat and named its possible targets for "RDX bombings or suicide attacks" as the
ASE, Somnath temple in Junagadh district, Akshardham temple, city civil hospital and other places of
equal importance.
Following this, a number of security measures have been adopted in the ASE premises including a
decision to "ban entry into the building without identity cards" from September 10, a decision that was
made after taking all the brokers into confidence in a high level meeting on September 9, administrator
of ASE P K Ghosh said.
Parking in the basement has also been banned and the ASE has urged police to make required
arrangements around the campus and also ensure other cars in the parking lot are not targeted, Ghosh
said.
He said a letter in this regard was sent to the police commissioner, while a meeting to review the security
was also held with the deputy commissioner.
Senior officials, when contacted said that the letter and its threats appear to be a prank, but no risk
would be taken and security would be tightened in the stock exchange.
