Flood situation in UP worsens; at least 12 killed

Lucknow: At least 12 people were killed and over 21,000 rendered homeless as the flood situation in
Uttar Pradesh worsened with flood waters from several rivers, including Ganga, Ghaghra, Betwa,
Mandakini and Ken, which are in spate, inundating large areas in Ballia, Chitrakoot, Banda and
Hamirpur districts, official sources said on September 10.
So far, 12 people have been killed in incidents of house collapse following incessant rains in
Pratapgarh, Sitapur and Ballia districts.
Additional district magistrate of Ballia, Kedar Prasad said that over 21,000 people had been affected by
the flood and property worth lakhs had been destroyed.
A team of officials on September 10 visited the flood affected areas to take stock of the situation, he
said.
Flood waters from Mandakini River had entered residential areas in Chitrakoot town forcing people to be
evacuated to safer places, the sources said.
The water level of several rivers, including Ganga, Ghaghra, Betia, Ken and Mandakini rivers, was rising
constantly threatening the low lying areas, they said.
Rescue operations had been launched in the affected districts and temporary shelters had been
erected, sources said.
The water level of River Gomti at Lucknow was also rising following continuous rains inundating several
low-lying localities, sources said.
