No question of mediation on Kashmir: Britain
Thursday, September 11 2003 22:21 Hrs (IST)
Chandigarh: Britain on September 11 said Kashmir was an issue between India and Pakistan and there
was no question of mediation over it.
"There is no question of mediation over Kashmir, it is an issue between India and Pakistan and has to
be solved by the two countries," British High Commissioner Sir Rob Young said delivering a lecture
on 'India and UK: Reflections on a Modern Partnership' at a function organised by Confederation of
Indian Industries (CII).
"But if the UK can help to reduce tensions and create the right conditions for productive dialogue, we
shall," he added.
"Our mutual concern about terrorism, and the need to work for an end to support for cross-border
terrorism, have brought our two governments together," Young said.
Young, whose term is to end shortly, said India and Britain were working together closely on a number of
regional issues, including Afghanistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
Stressing that bilateral relations between the two countries were "as strong as ever", Young said
defence equipment collaboration has received a major boost with the recent decision of the Indian
government to buy Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers (AJTs).
Asked about the threat posed by terrorism to the world, Young said, "Both India and the United Kingdom
have suffered the terrible effects of terrorism first hand. Terrorism is an attack on the human rights and
civil liberties of all people.
"Our Prime Ministers made a commitment to set up our bilateral co-operation in counter-terrorism,
including training, building on the work of the UK/India Joint Working Group on Terrorism. This is a
commitment we take very seriously," he added.
