Rocca meets Jethmalani, terrorism figures in talks
Thursday, September 11 2003 21:19 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Christina Rocca on September 11 held a meeting with the Kashmir Committee led by Ram Jethmalani and discussed various issues including the measures needed to put an end to the menace of terrorism across the globe.

Both sides remained tight-lipped after the 90-minute meeting held at the residence of Jethmalani, in which Rocca was assisted by four officials of Political Section of the US Embassy including Deputy Political Advisor Jassary Pyatt.

After the meeting, Jethmalani was reluctant to share the details with reporters and said "even before the beginning of the meeting, both sides had agreed not to speak to the media as it was altogether a private affair."

"Only thing is that we met on September 11 as we are partners in ending terrorism in the world and both sides agreed that dialogue was the only means of resolving all issues," he said.

Asked whether Kashmir issue figured during the meeting, he said "obviously, yes. After all Kashmir is an issue between India and Pakistan which needs to be resolved. We have assured to contribute whatever little we can do to bring everyone on the negotiating table."

Except for Fali Nariman all other members of the Kashmir Committee were present at the meeting.

Sources in the meeting, however, said that Committee members stressed on the need to put more pressure on Pakistan for putting an end to cross border terrorism and asserted this step would help a great deal in ending the hostilities between the two countries.
