BMAC rejects ASI report, asks BJP to shun campaign
Friday, September 12 2003 22:17 Hrs (IST)
Lucknow: As Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) planned to revive the temple movement in the light of
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) report on excavations in Ayodhya ahead of Assembly polls in four
states, the Babri Masjid Action Committee (BMAC) on September 12 dismissed the report as "untenable
and full of contradictions" and asked saffron outfits to shun campaign on its basis.
"The leaders of Sangh Parivar should stop spreading false propaganda by quoting ASI report of
Ayodhya excavation that there existed a temple at the disputed site, atop which a mosque was built on
16th century," three BMAC leaders Abdul Mannan, Zafaryab Jilani and Mushtaq Ahmad Siddaqui said in
a joint statement.
They said the ASI report, even if presumed to be correct, could hardly be of any assistance to the
protagonists of the temple movement.
"The report neither supports the theory of alleged construction of the so-called Ram Janmabhoomi
temple during the regime of Vikramaditya, nor does it throw any light upon the alleged story of
destruction of the said temple during the regime of Babar," the three leaders said.
They said in this light, the demand made by Sangh Parivar leaders asking the Muslims to handover the
land to the Hindus was "totally preposterous and unwarranted".
The BMAC termed the ASI report as "unreliable and untenable as it is full of contradictions, omissions
and was full of loopholes".
Sangh Parivar leaders, they said, were "trying to give an impression that the ASI report is conclusive
and has been accepted by the court".
