Saturday, September 13 2003 17:57 Hrs (IST)
Srinagar: Father of counter-insurgency in the Valley and former legislator Mohammad Yousuf Parray
alias Kuka Parray was on September 13 killed in a militant attack in his hometown Hajan in Baramulla
district of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said.
Parray died on the spot when militants hurled grenades and fired indiscriminately at him, they said.
Three other persons were injured in the attack.
Officials said Parray and two others were killed in the attack, which took place outside his house around
2.45 pm (IST), when the former legislator was leaving for attending final match of a local cricket
tournament, organised by an Army unit, as the chief guest.
However, unofficial sources put the death toll at four.
Parray shot to fame when he turned his gun at former colleagues and started an organised counter-
insurgency movement in 1995 from Hajan.
He formed a political outfit Jammu and Kashmir Awami League along with other counter-insurgents and
contested the Assembly polls in 1996. He was elected to the state legislature from Sonawari
constituency in Baramulla district.
Parray contested the 2002 Assembly polls, but lost to National Conference candidate Mohammad Akbar
Lone.
Militants had made several attempts on his life in the past few years. Many of his family members were
killed by militants.
