Naxals attack police station: 1 cop killed, 7 hurt
Sunday, September 14 2003 13:32 Hrs (IST)

Raipur: A day after attacking Dantewada Superintendent of Police's convoy, naxals belonging to outlawed PWG (Peoples War Group) tonight (September 13 night) attacked and looted a police station in Dantewada district killing a police constable and injuring seven other police personnel, including a sub-inspector before fleeing with arms and abducting a police constable, police said.

About 100 armed naxalites attacked Gidham police station in the district and blew up the front side of the police station with grenades, Dantewada police sources said.

Unconfirmed reports said three police personnel were killed in the attack.

Sources said Behramgarh and Indravati Dalam of the PWG were involved in the attack.

The ultras fired about 500 rounds, sources said and fled towards Bijapur in a truck taking police arms with them.

They blocked NH-16 before the attack and also made announcement to this effect in the city.

The naxals may have planted landmine on the route to the police station, which may result delay rushing additional forces to the area, sources added.

The ultras on September 13 attacked SP P Gautam's convoy near Dodari close to Orissa-Andhra border.

While one police constable was killed in the attack and another injured in the cross firing, a woman injured in the cross firing succumbed to injuries this morning, police said.

The naxals had also planted landmine to attack the SP's convoy but failed to trigger it, police added.
