VHP gives ultimatum to Centre on Ram temple
Monday, September 15 2003 19:29 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on September 15 gave an ultimatum to the Centre that if it
does not convene a special session of Parliament to legislate for the construction of Ram temple in
Ayodhya, it would launch a nationwide agitation from October 15.
"If the government does not convene a special session of Parliament to approve a legislation for the
construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, we would launch our movement from October 15 with a rally in
Delhi and a march to Ayodhya from Lucknow on October 17," VHP leader Mahant Avaidyanath told
reporters in New Delhi.
"We had given time to the government to bring a legislation in Parliament for the construction of the
temple. It was decided at today (September 15)'s meeting that if this was not done, we would go ahead
with our plan to have a rally in Delhi on October 15 and a march to Ayodhya from Lucknow on October
17," Avaidyanath said with VHP working president Ashok Singhal on his side.
He said members of all political parties who are Ram bakhts should, "for the sake of Ram", participate in
the construction of the temple. "It was not just a question of Ram temple but it was the birthplace of
Ram," he added.
The Mahant said that even the report of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had said that a temple
existed at the site prior to the mosque.
