Reactions-- Is it a sin to be a Kannadiga in K'taka?
Tuesday, September 16 2003 19:47 Hrs (IST)

Namastee Venkatesh,

It was a superb article, I have forwarded this article to many of my friends and colleagues. But in our office majority of them are Kannadigas. We are around 650+. It will be good, if we keep getting this article, so that KANNADIGAS open their eyes. But the sad thing is even Kannadigas doesn't speak Kannada even if they know, they reply back in English/Hindi.

I have seen many of them keep talking in Kannada, but as soon as they seen someone coming from the other side, they suddenly switch over to English or Hindi. On a whole, It was a superb article. Inti Nimma

Venkat,

You have all the material to be another short-sighted politician. "Yatha Raja Tatha Praja and Yatha Praja Tatha Raja" If the 'Raja' is not good, the people also will follow suit and if the people are not sensible enough neither will be the 'Raja'. Grow up dude. Sincerely,
Hari

I know. It hurts every time I think about it. There is not much we can do unless people feel proud of their language. It is very sad. Even Kannadigas are shy to speak in Kannada in public in those places.

Hi,

It is true about what is written in the article to some extent. But did the author look at the statistics of people gone abroad and made some significant achievements away from home. Most of them are Kannadigas ;)[in IT field]. May be it looks like all the brilliant Kannadigas have gone [flown] out of India for good or worse!!! And moreover, rural Kannadigas are yet to make mark in their own cities. [As in case of Tamilnadu/Kerala]

In other states there are IT revolutions in smaller cities, which in turn help people to migrate to big cities and continue careers. I don't think it so here in our Karnataka. Most of them come to Bangalore directly to start off the career and then move onto other bigger places/countries. ;) And also, the infrastructure & climate here is so good compared to other states, everyone with money/intelligence come here and try their luck.

Then they push their own people to strategic positions/employment. My personal experience with mallu HRs, if you have noticed, most of the HRs in the IT industry in Bangalore are outsiders. [That says about what is written in the article]

Moreover, Kannadigas have the habit of speaking in all other languages except Kannada. Physiologically this proves that we are more concerned and helpful towards strangers in the Strange Land. But others are not so!

Jai Karnataka Maate. This is not an argument. Just my Views

Regards,
Suresh JV.

Dear Sir/Madam,

It is really very sad to read that the author is sounding a big pessimist and where India is heading towards. A great country with different casts and creed is being divided on the local politics and selfishness. I being a north Indian have worked for a Chennai based company for more than three years. I never complained about that people around me, taking a language alien to me but I tried and succeed in learning the language.

Incidentally I too was working in Tidal Park. If every one thinks that the state population should be preferred, then a scenario will come they will feel the district population should be preferred and then it will come done to town so on. In the times when whole of India should be one; I find such ideas from very sorry state of a mind. People who are not capable, are looking out at all these senseless reasons. I request you to please avoid publishing such articles in future.

Regards,
Virendra

What I have been observing is there are lot of kannadigas who die for kannada. Whenever there is a article like this, I see lot of responses coming to support that. That is a great news. This is a huge problem and we have to fight systematically to kick this out. This is the high time when we have to save our identity or else we have no chance. The problem explained here is not just in IT but everywhere. It is like death. It takes whole body not just some parts. Everybody has to protect their interests and we have it too. Unfortunately, we youngsters have this responsibility on our shoulders.

Harsha.

Dear Editor,

First of all my heartful thanks to Mr.Venkatesh who has raised up this issue. It is good if government seriously considers taking up this issue and give an opportunity to localities in IT and other industries. With the exorbitant facilities to top the good climate of Bangalore given to the firms, they must consider this immediately. Localities of Bangalore should not be neglected and it is true but shocking that top Management in firms and HR are going all way out to other states to select candidates. I can quote an example where the company has selected candidates for training & recruitment and not one from Karnataka. Will our people and Government be mild and take all this or will they atleast introduce rules to give a better life to Kannadigas.

Regards
Amith

Good writing. But who is going to feel for it as many Kannadigas living aborad and have no respect and faith for their own language. I have experienced the same thing and I have started to teach our children and speak only in Kannada where ever I go including these 5 diamond hotels and domestic airlines.

We are three friends who are very strong in making our communications in Kannada where ever we go. All 3 of us are professionally settled and only people like us can make an impact by setting ourselves as an example for the younger generation.

The solution is to unite with Mr. Vatal Nagraj or any such Kannadigas who are willing to reach politicians for implementing serious steps towards development of our local Kannada professionals and other.

The basic is that we must start this step from our homes. I have started at my home, have you and your other friends started?

Jai Karnataka, Jai Kannada. Jai Bharat Mathe.

Best wishes
Balakrishna

I would like to tell the author to grow up! He should be proud of the advancement in technology Bangalore has gone through. We should not be petty minded about Kannadiga and non-Kannadigas. Its a free country - companies want to attract the best talents so they go to different cities. If the engineers from these umpteen colleges cannot withstand the competitive edge with engineers from other states then yes, they probably selected the wrong career. Having lot of engineering colleges is not the problem - maintaining a standard is the problem.

If we decide that anybody can become an engineer as long as they are able to pay a hefty donation, this will be the plight of these engineers. One has to flow with the times.Be more open with the culture and language - make people want to learn it rather than push it down someone's throat. And let's not keep looking towards the US as an example for everything. Having restrictive policies / environment will not help to preserve your culture or language - here's a few pointers:

Indians living in US for the past twenty years or more still enjoy indian cuisine. Indian kids born in US do learn Bharthanatyam and other classical dances. Indians living in US celebrate Diwali, Dandiya Raas, Onam etc Indians living in US go to temples.

If you want more examples of the US - here's another - US as a country made itself attractive to every person that exists in this world - end result - the brightest brains are here ensuring that the US is the world leader in every aspect.

Kannada as a language cannot die just because people from other states live in Karnataka. As long as Kannadigas are proud of being Kannadigas, our culture and language can never die. We have to look inwards not outwards to retain our history. If we are not proud of who we are, our culture will die with us. The examples of Tamil Nadu and Kerala shows exactly that - they are a closed society - people from other states have no inclination to relocate there. These states are not able to attract the brightest brains - so they are the losers.

So lets be more futuristic, welcome people from all over the country and help them assimilate into Bangalore - The future of India!

Thanks,
Kavitha
