Musharraf refuses to quit Army post: Report
Thursday, September 18 2003 22:30 Hrs (IST)

Islamabad: Amid reports that President Pervez Musharraf has told Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali he would not quit as Army Chief to strike a compromise with the Opposition, a united Opposition on September 18 extended its protest against the Pakistani President to the Upper House and staged a walkout.

Media reports said that Musharraf, during his meeting with Jamali on September 17 declined to resign from the post of Chief of Army by December next year as demanded by Islamist alliance, Muthahida Majlis Amal (MMA).

Musahrraf's rejection was expected to be formally announced by Jamali on September 19 as the Prime Minister sought two days to inform the MMA to finalise an understanding over Musharraf's Constitutional amendments and the legality of his Presidency.
