Is it a Sin to be born a Kannadiga? - More reactions
Thursday, September 18 2003 20:57 Hrs (IST)

Here is my reaction,

Authors reactions are arguably with deep emotion towards our Kannada as a language and we as Kannadigas. And why not!!! (I feel we should hold that emotion for our mother tongue somewhere inside and work for its betterment).

I read the reactions from people on this article with same curiosity as I read the article. Some of the reactions were really very good, especially the ones from Balakrishna and Kavitha. (People who have not read all the reactions, have a look!!) My thoughts match with theirs to some extent. Apart from that, let me add something more rather than repeating the same thing.

Let's start working towards keeping "The Essence" Kannada and Kannadigas alive, like,

  • Can we keep all our unofficial communication in Kannada, being Kannadigas!! (When you go for shopping, when you go to super market, when you go to a hotel, I mean literally everywhere except official communication because it is supposed to be English in the IT world).

  • Let the best talent get the opportunity, irrespective of language bars! We Kannadigas should take some responsibility to convey the information to our fellow brilliant Kannadigas about the best offers in our companies! That will ease their search!! (I feel we have a weak point here).

  • Are we strong enough to raise our voice and bring our concerns to management notice on the bias towards any particular language or community if we feel it is happening? (I feel we should oppose such acts if it's happening!).

  • Let's wish that India's best talent land in our state (let us be generous as always) and make it the best in the world!! At the same time it's we Kannadigas, who should make strategies and plans to compete with best and grab the majority share of the apple!! (I wish and hope we can do that!!)

  • I strictly oppose the author's idea of government policies to bring in priority in employment for localites!! This sounds like mediocrity to me. We Kannadigas sure have it in us!! Why can't we be competitive enough and get what we want (I feel sorry that we have to struggle to get something in our own state. Let's compete now, before it's too late!)

  • Finally, let us Kannadigas work together and try to be more open and competitive for the best people in world and let grab the majority. TRY!! TRY!! TRY!!

I remember the famous proverb "Nanu Karnataka Matheya Veer Putra rather then, Veer Karnataka Matheya Putra".

Let's work towards what we can give to Kannada and Kannadigas and others who come to our Bangalore rather then thinking of getting advantage of being a Kannadiga!!!

Sanjay VY.

Hi,

Thanks to Venkatesh to take up a important issue and a sensitive issue too.

This is a problem very much evident in any cosmopolitan city and Bangalore is no exception.

By going through the articles and the reactions, groupism is also the bone of contention.

Groupism is more common in the Telegus who are more popular as "Gults" and Tamilians who are also well known in bangalore as "Katpadis".

Mallus groupism is very weak, they backstab anybody including their own people, so just ignore those groups.

Groupism is a real problem which is making the recruitments very unfair. If you find such please inform the top management about it. Any sensible organisation will not encourage it.

Because, groupism is like Cancer, if not checked, it will eat away the whole organisation.

I am a non Kannadiga and I would like to tell you that Kannadigas are more friendly, well mannered and most important they do not get into groupism.

I do not agree with the idea of many about the quota system for Kannadigas in companies. Simply because, the success of any organisation is because of the team work and not because of any individuals.

I would like to suggest the following for Kannadigas, which can keep you feel better in your work place.

  • When you distribute the wedding cards or any get together cards in your work place, make it a point to print it both in Kannada and english. This way, you are exhibiting your dearness to Kannada.

  • When there is a office get together, find out some body who can sing in Kannada and make sure he or she gets the oppurtunity to sing a Kannada song on the ocassion. Put forth your ideas in the right way, no body will ignore your idea.

  • Whenever there is antakshari, dont hesitate to sing Kannada songs.

  • When you distribute sweets, distribute sweets like "Mysore pak", "Dharwar halwa" and more tradional stuffs.

  • In your office If any official discussions are going on in Hindi or any other langauage, tell them to speak in English and you can explain them that you dont speak Hindi fluently.

  • If an auto driver or a vegetable vendor or a shop fellow speaks in any other language, continue to speak in Kannada, if that fellow can understand Kannada he will also speak in Kannada. Most of them pretend not knowing Kannada, but dont worry everybody knows. Reason is simple, when our Bangalore cops go out for a roll call ride, he completes his collection by speaking in Kannada.

  • Expressing your love towards Kannada is good but becoming a Kannada Fanatic is not good. Dont become a fanatic.

My suggestion to non Kannadigas are:

  • If you dont know Kannada, try and learn speaking Kannada, Its a very good and a easy language to learn.who knows it may save you somewhere.Frankly i learnt speaking Kannada from my Kannada speaking colleagues.

  • If you dont feel like learning Kannada, dont learn. But encourage your kids to learn Kannada, kids can learn langauges faster.

  • Visit some good places in karnataka. Some places to be vsisted are Belur, Halebidu, Agumbe, Jog Falls, Sangama, Mysore, KRS, Dharmasthala, Madikeri etc.

  • Remember you are living in a cosmopolitan city and its dangerous to be in your own groups and friends. Mix and get along with everybody, avoid groupism. Its going to keep you away from the everybody.

  • Its very important to understand the importance of Kannada. It will help you a lot when you interact with karnataka government officials. You can avoid the touts and brokers who eat up your money when you visit any govt office.

My experience was by learning Kannada, my relationship with people has improved a lot and has helped me to be a part of Bangalore.

Hey Hari, your "Yatha Raja Tatha Praja and Yatha Praja Tatha Raja" is a stupid comparision.

By reading this article, why the hell are you panicked, open your eyes and look around, no body is banging you.

Virendra, this is a sensitive article and you cannot avoid reading such stuff over the net. This is a democratic country and the right to express an individual's view cannot be denied.

I can see the feeling of insecurity in you. Dont behave like a kid.

Madam Kavita, I appreciate your futuristic thought, read the article thoroughly and also understand it completely. Its more to do with "groupism".

Sincerely,
Pradeep Khanna.
