OIC invites Geelani for New York meeting
Friday, September 19 2003 14:27 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: In a move seen as a jolt to Ansari-led faction, the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) has invited Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman of breakaway Hurriyat Conference, to attend a meeting of Foreign Ministers of Islamic countries in New York during September end.

In a communication to firebrand Jamaat-i-Islami leader, OIC functionary Abdul Ahad-al-Aziz addressed Geelani as chairman of the Hurriyat Conference and invited him for the meeting, sources close to Geelani said.

The invitation to Geelani is considered a jolt to Ansari-led faction of the separatist alliance, as Hurriyat enjoys status of an observer in the OIC.

The 25-party conglomerate split when 13 General Council members of the alliance moved a no confidence in Ansari and formed a parallel Hurriyat Conference on September 7.
