Tehelka rejects panel's demand for original tapes
Friday, September 19 2003 22:59 Hrs (IST)

Chandigarh: Rejecting Justice Phukan Commission's demand for producing the original equipment used by the portal in the Defence purchases bribery expose, tehelka.com on September 19 said "it amounts to victimisation and witch-hunting campaign" against it.

"Even after four months they (the Commission) are not able to find anything against us," Tehelka chief executive officer (CEO) Tarun J Tejpal said.

"We (Tehelka) are not taking part in the Commission. This is another drama against us," he said.

Tejpal was reacting to the order of the Commission, which is probing the Defence purchases bribery expose by the portal in 2001, that Tehelka should produce within a week the original equipment used in the sting operation as foreign experts have expressed doubts over certain portions of the video tapes.

Declaring that they will consult their lawyer for further action, he said, "Tehelka has given everything...all papers and documents to relevant persons."

"We don't trust their intentions and it is one more evidence," he added.

He demanded that the Commission should tell them where it had sent the tapes. "This is all scandalous," he said.
