Diesel, Petrol, Fruits drive up inflation to 4.29 %
Sunday, September 21 2003 11:16 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Costlier diesel, petrol and food articles, mainly fruits, pushed up inflation substantially by 0.41 per cent to 4.29 per cent for the week ended September 6.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation, which remained below four per cent for five consecutive weeks, rose from 3.88 per cent in the previous week and it was 0.58 per cent higher from 3.71 per cent in the year-ago period.

WPI spiralled by 0.5 per cent to 174.9 points during the first week of September this year as compared to 174 points a week ago and the index was 167.7 points in the previous year.

The final point-to-point inflation and WPI stood at their respective provisional levels of 4.65 per cent and 173.3 points for the week ended July 12.

Inflation would be below four per cent in the coming months with good monsoons and decline in money supply, economists told PTI.

They indicated that there was no cause of concern for the "intermittent" rise in inflation.

Index of mass consumption Primary Articles' group shot up over one per cent to 180 points due to steep increase in the price of food articles and it was 177.2 points in the previous year period.

Food Articles' group index skyrocketed by 1.6 per cent to 181.2 points owing to costlier fruits (16 per cent), poultry chicken (seven per cent), eggs (two per cent) and maize (one per cent), while prices dipped for bajra and tea (four per cent), fish-inland (two per cent) and arhar, masur and gram (one per cent each).
