Chandigarh: Seeking to project construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya as a national cause, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on September 21 said the issue concerned not only the party and the Sangh Parivar but the faith of crores of people in the country.

"Several people including friends from the media ask me if BJP will make the Ram temple an issue in the coming polls, but I clarify that it is not just the BJP, RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) or VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) who want the temple to be constructed...crores of people in this country want it to happen," party general secretary Pramod Mahajan said addressing party workers.

Lashing out at those who sought proof that Lord Ram was born at the disputed site in Ayodhya, he said, "Now even the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) report has proved that a temple existed at the site."

Mahajan said that it would be of great benefit to the parties concerned if the issue was amicably resolved. "We are in favour of the issue being resolved through talks."

He said that the court's decision on the temple issue would help clear up things.

Addressing the workers after announcing the name of Yashpal Mahajan as the president of the party's Chandigarh unit for a three-year term, Mahajan appealed to the workers to create a conducive atmosphere throughout the country which would facilitate early construction of the temple.
