United Nations: France on September 23 backed India's candidature as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

"I cannot imagine an expanded Council without India becoming a permanent member," said French President Jacques Chirac when asked by reporters whether he would support India to be a permanent member in case the Council is expanded.

Earlier in his address to the UN General Assembly, Chirac had made a strong plea for expansion of the Security Council.
