Congress alleges political misuse of POTA
Wednesday, September 24 2003 22:47 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Congress on September 24 said that its worse fears that Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) would be misused politically had come true but refrained from commenting on Tamil Nadu government's decision to slap the Act against Union Minister and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) Treasurer M Kannappan for his alleged open support to banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy told reporters that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led coalition "foisted" POTA by enacting the draconian legislation despite opposition from Congress, which feared that it could be politically misused.

However, on questions concerning slapping of POTA against Kannappan, he said that the Congress was "not competent" to say anything in the matter and only a Constitutional authority like the Supreme Court could make any pronouncement.

Reddy said that Congress had a "bad experience" of Terrorists And Disruptive Act (TADA) and felt that POTA would never succeed in curbing terrorism.
