Hurriyat backs Musharraf's offer of ceasefire
Friday, September 26 2003 18:08 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference on September 26 supported Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's suggestion for a ceasefire along the line of control (LoC) in Kashmir and appealed to India to respond positively.

"I support Musharraf's suggestion for ceasefire and appeal to India to reciprocate positively to smoothen the way for a permanent solution to Kashmir problem," Hurriyat chairman Maulvi Mohammad Abbas Ansari said in a statement.

Such a ceasefire, he said, would help in creating a conducive atmosphere for a permanent solution to the Kashmir problem.

Musharraf told the United Nations General Assembly on September 24 that he would invite India to observe complete ceasefire along the LoC in Kashmir.

"I also appeal to militants in Jammu and Kashmir to drop their guns, so that concrete steps are taken for resolution of Kashmir issue," Ansari said.
