Pejawar Seer proposes new formula for Ayodhya row
Saturday, September 27 2003 18:31 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore: Offering a new formula to the Ayodhya row, a senior Ram Janmabhoomi movement leader
closely linked with VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) on September 27 proposed that Muslims hand over the
disputed land to Hindus and Hindus allow Muslims to build a mosque "a little away" from the temple on
the undisputed land.
Making his formula public at a press conference in Bangalore Pejawar Mutt senior pontiff Sri Vishwesha
Tirtha Swamiji, a Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas Trustee, also said since there was a government order to
maintain status quo in Kashi and Mathura, it would not be wise to rake up those issues "at present" and
efforts should be made to solve the Ayodhya tangle.
He said VHP had not agreed to his formula which provided for building a mosque nearby the temple
but "irrespective of what VHP says", government should bring Muslim and Hindu leaders together and
convince them about the new solution.
"Even if VHP does not agree and if Muslims agree, it is fine", the Swamiji who is in the "Margadarshak
Mandal" of VHP on Ram temple movement, said. He said if the VHP later opposed construction of the
mosque a little distance away from the Ram temple, they would "not get any support".
Muslims and their leaders should consider the Archaeological Survey of India excavation report and
come forward for an amicable settlement, while Hindus should not "adamantly" ask Muslims to construct
the mosque further away from "the Panchakroshi", he said.
The pontiff said he had informed Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi of his proposal and the
latter had called it "appropriate" and assured him that he would talk to Muslim leaders about it.
