XSports – A touring club of Indian sport supporters
Monday, September 29 2003 19:41 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: Leading sporting nations have them - garrulous sport lovers travelling to major sporting events to back and root for their boys and girls. And now, such a band of touring club of Indian sport supporters is in the making.

XSports Bangalore, supported by ace spinner Anil Kumble, on September 29 launched "The Desimators", a travelling club of that kind.

The inaugural tour of "The Desimators" is to Australia, where they will go all out to back the Indian team and it's being promoted as the "best choice for a quality cricket and holiday experience".

At a press conference, where Kumble was present, Xsports Bangalore's chief executive officer (CEO) Shankar Vishwanathan said while cricket is "one big focus area" for the Desimators club, other major sports events where Indians figure in a significant way could follow.

In this context, he referred to the possibility of taking such a club to Wimbledon to root for Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi and Anju B George at the Athens Olympics.

For the Desimators' Australian trip, the number of its members would be restricted to 200, Vishwanathan said, adding the strategy is to build a club.

He indicated that the idea is to tap the sports travel segment which is a "rapidly growing business" in India.

Kumble said it's about time people of India travel to support India, which is "very much required".
