Monday, September 29 2003 10:59 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: Share prices resumed on a firm note with the benchmark crossing 4,400-mark at opening session on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on September 29 on sustained buying by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and operators.

The BSE-30 share sensitive index opened higher at 4,392.87 and moved in a narrow range between 4,409.79 and 4,385.54 before being quoted at 4,402.60 at 10.30 am (IST) as against September 26 close of 4,382.57.

Telecom shares like Bharti Tele, Himachal Future and Tata Telecom continued to be in keen demand on speculative buying.

Barring a few IT shares such as Infosys Tech, Wipro and Geometric Soft that showed minor losses, most of the other software stocks also attracted good buying despite negative advices from Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index declined by 30.88 points and 25.17 points on September 26.

Cement and Steel stocks remained in the limelight on continued buying by operators.

Top heavyweight and petro-chem giant, RIL, remained the favourites of institutional investors and was quoted remarkably higher, aiding the SENSEX rise.

Among major gainers, Whirlpool was quoted higher by 8.23 per cent, Himachal Futu by 6.81 per cent, Torrent Pharma by 5.85 per cent, Bharti Tele by 5.23 per cent, Aurobindo Ph by 5.22 per cent, JK Bank by 5.00 per cent, SAIL by 4.53 per cent, Hinduja TMT by 4.39 per cent, Cadila Health by 4.18 per cent and SSI Ltd by 3.84 per cent.

However, Pfizer, Gujarat Gas, Glaxo-Smithkline Consumer, Infosys Tech and Asian Paints were moderate losers.
