Need for mechanism to check misuse of POTA: BJP
Tuesday, September 30 2003 20:11 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on September 30 said there was need for the Review Committee on Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) to evolve a mechanism for redressal of cases under this Act as its "misapplication" would only increase the demand for repeal of POTA.

"The government can request the review committee on POTA to evolve a mechanism for redressal of cases under this Act for apparently MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act) had a state-level review committee for this purpose," party sources said.

The sources said the party was clear that POTA is needed and there is no question of repealing it because of the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) menace as also that of terrorism.

"There was misapplication of POTA in the case of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko and in the case of Raja Bhaiyya, who could have been booked under another law," the sources said.

They said that the need for evolving a mechanism by the review committee on POTA would be discussed by party president M Venkaiah Naidu with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee later on September 30.
