Washington: Pakistan Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has charged the ruling Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) with using normalisation of ties with Islamabad as an "election slogan" even as he claimed
US has assured him that it would play a key role in resumption of dialogue with India.
"The BJP is using the slogan of normalisation of talks with Pakistan as an election slogan, while it lacked
commitment," Jamali told a delegation of Texas representatives at the Capitol Hill, shortly after holding a
luncheon meeting with US President George Bush at the White House on October 1.
Jamali went on to accuse the BJP of wanting to "benefit from the slogan" for achieving better results in
the next Lok Sabha elections.
In this regard, he also cited the Gujarat Assembly elections and said BJP made a "good show" in the
wake of the "massacre of 2000 innocent Muslims".
Charging New Delhi with not responding to Pakistan's offer for dialogue, he said Kashmir, which was the
oldest pending item on UN agenda, could only be settled through negotiations. "To avoid talks on one or
the other pretext and to avoid discussing the core issue, could hardly serve any purpose," he
said.
Jamali later told reporters that Bush assured him that US would play active role to revive the India-Pak
talks.
"The US will continue to play an important role in the revival of the Pakistan-India dialogue process, to
resolve outstanding issues, including Kashmir," he said.
