Friday, October 3 2003 20:27 Hrs (IST)

Rayagada (Orissa): Residents of several villages on October 3 rounded up seven naxalites at different places in the Chandrapur forests in Rayagada district and handed them over to the police, official sources said.

Peeved over the activities of the ultras in the area, the villagers detained the naxalites and later informed the police, Superintendent of Police R K Sharma said.

All of them were produced before a court at Bissam, Cuttack, later and were remanded to jail custody for 15 days.

In a related development, about 1,000 villagers of Siriguda under Gudari police station in the district on October 3 took out a procession opposing naxalite activities in the area. They later held a meeting where a decision not to allow any naxalite activity in the area was taken, the SP said.
