'Funds for Godhra victims were eaten by BJP and VHP'
Sunday, October 5 2003 21:04 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: Describing the Godhra train carnage as "politically motivated", the relatives of the victims on October 5 demanded an immediate transfer of the inquiry outside Gujarat under the supervision of the Supreme Court.

Addressing reporters, the relatives of the victims, under the aegis of the prominent city based NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had "used" them for political gains and said they felt abandoned.

They also lamented that 19 months after 58 persons were roasted alive in Sabarmati Express, they were still struggling to get compensation from the state government and added that they have lost hope in the BJP government.

82-year-old Dr Girish Rawal, whose wife Sudha was killed in the train carnage while returning from Ayodhya and son Ashwin was stabbed in post-Godhra violence, said the BJP and VHP-sponsored Ayodhya Yatra was "politically motivated".

The BJP had taken our family members and assured of bringing them back safely, he said questioning why their family members were sent ahead without any of the BJP members accompanying them?

Bharat Panchal, who lost his wife Jyoti in the carnage, further accused BJP and VHP of getting away with the compensation allotted to the victims.

He said they have not been paid the entire compensation money and demanded an investigation into source of funds and their use by VHP and BJP, who received the amount in the names of the Godhra victims.
