Israel defends attacks on Palestinian militant camps

New Delhi: Facing condemnation from India and several other countries, Israel on October 6 defended
its attacks on purported training camps of a Palestinian militant outfit in Syria, asserting there was no
immunity to terrorist organisations and those governments, which nurtured the menace.
"My government has always maintained that there is no immunity, no sanctuary to terrorist organisations
and those governments which nurture the cult of terrorism, support and harbour terrorist organisations,"
Israeli Ambassador to India David Daniell said.
"So, the attack against Islamic jihad in Syria should be seen against this backdrop," he said when asked
about the October 5 attack.
Israel has contended that the air strikes were in "self defence" and counter-charged Damascus with
training, funding and harbouring terrorists.
Strongly condemning the Israeli attack, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had on October 5 last night
stressed that the cycle of violence and counter-violence must end in that region.
The Israeli Army attacked what it claimed an Islamic jihad training base in Syria in retaliation for a suicide
bombing at a Haifa restaurant that killed 19 people.
