Tuesday, October 7 2003 20:01 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: Iqbal Kaskar, younger brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, and his two associates, held under a stringent law of Maharashtra in a land grabbing case, were remanded to police custody for three days from October 8.

The two associates of Iqbal are Abdul Sattar Teli and Abdul Rehman Abdul Gafoor Shaikh.

In keeping with a High Court directive, they were on October 7 placed in police custody for three days by designated judge A P Bhangale of a court set up under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Of the 30-day police remand period, the accused have already spent 27 days in custody. They are now placed in judicial remand. However, in keeping with a High Court directive, Iqbal and his associate were remanded to police custody for three days.

In another development, Iqbal's lawyer Sham Keswani filed an application saying the accused did not nurture a desire to give statement or confession to the cops in police custody.

Iqbal was arrested under MCOCA on March 6 after he was deported from Dubai. He is facing the charges of channelising funds of the underworld into the real estate in Mumbai.

Iqbal and his associate had developed Sara Business Centre and Sahara Shopping Complex near police commissionerate in South Mumbai with the underworld money. These shopping complexes were illegal and have been attached by the court.

According to police, Dawood had pumped a lot of money into the real estate here by purchasing old buildings and converting them into multiplexes. Dawood and his brothers, Noora, Mushtaqeen and Anees are still absconding.
