India keen on salvaging gains at WTO: Yashwant Sinha
Tuesday, October 7 2003 10:18 Hrs (IST)

Bali (Indonesia): Observing that India was keen on "salvaging" the gains of the Doha round, External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha on October 6 night said the failure of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) conference at Cancun showed that the developed world did not want a "politically and economically equitable" world order.

"Nothing has been lost. We should salvage the Doha developments and India is interested in that," Sinha told a business gathering organised by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on the sidelines of the Indo-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit to be opened by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on October 7.

He said the happenings at Cancun showed that "strength lies in unity" among the developing countries. "We want to protect our legitimate interests. There should an international order which is politically and economically equitable," he added.

Ministers from 146 countries meeting in Cancun in September failed to adopt a declaration that would have given a push to the current round of WTO talks on subjects ranging from agriculture to services.
