ULFA serves Rs 2 crore extortion notice to HLL
Tuesday, October 7 2003 13:01 Hrs (IST)

Guwahati: The banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has served a Rs two crore extortion notice to the Hindustan Lever Limited's (HLL) Doom Dooma division in Assam, a company spokesman said on October 7.

The extortion letter had been delivered on September 26 and HLL reported the matter to Assam and Union governments, company general manager (corporate communication) S Bhattacharya said.

Both the governments had taken all measures to ensure the security of the HLL employees and continuity of its operations in tea plantations as well as in factories, he said.

The company, which is part of Unilever, operated in more than 50 countries and did not make any extortion payments following its global policy, Bhattacharya said.

"We have a long and abiding commitment to Assam and its people," he added.
