Thursday, October 9 2003 13:26 Hrs (IST)

Baghdad: An apparent suicide car bomber hit a police station in North East Baghdad on October 9 morning and police said there were many casualties, dead among them.

It was reported that the driver drove through the police compound gate under, was fired at by officers and then detonated the bomb at 9.30 am local time.

The Al-Jazeera satellite broadcaster reported seven people killed.

Police Col Muthana Hussein said there were at least 20 casualties. A dozen of ambulances raced toward the facility in the Shiite Muslim slum known as Sadr City. The attack happened just as policemen were lining up in the courtyard of the facility for the morning role call.

There were many mangled police cars at the bomb site and much debris in the big courtyard in front of the one-story building.
