Incessant rains affect over 800 families in Meghalaya

Shillong: Incessant rains on October 10 claimed one life and affected about 800 families in Meghalaya's
East Khasi Hills district.
Official sources said one woman was killed in house collapse in Laban area of Shillong on October 10
morning while large parts of polo ground, Laitumukhra, Lower Jail Road,
Mawlai areas of the state capital were inundated.
About 800 families in the district, mostly in Shillong, had been affected.
According to MET office, the district received a maximum rainfall of 188.8 mm till 8 AM today from 8 PM
yesterday, a record in the last two years. The rains, which lashed the district for the past three days,
however, stopped this morning.
Home Minister R G Lyngdoh said police were deployed to assist the affected people. Besides, the fire
brigade and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were also rendering help.
He said magistrates were sent to the affected areas to take stock of the situation.
