Ayodhya: Stepping up its offensive, Uttar Pradesh government on October 13 rounded up over 1,100 Ayodhya-bound Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists across the state even as it fortified the temple town deploying 100 companies of paramilitary forces to thwart the saffron outfit's proposed rally on October 17.

Nearly 450 people were picked up from trains at Ayodhya and Faizabad railway stations, 400 in Varanasi and 350 in Allahabad as authorities hinted at taking Army's help if the situation so warranted.

With the October 13 drive, nearly 4,000 karsevaks has been detained statewide.
