Invitation for talks must come from PM: Hurriyat
Monday, October 13 2003 18:54 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Hurriyat Conference on October 13 shot down the proposal of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed for appointment of a Special Emissary for holding talks with separatists and said that any invitation should be directly from Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

"We have no interest in any special emissary. If the government is serious, then an invitation should come directly from the Prime Minister," Hurriyat Conference Chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari said.

He said that Hurriyat Conference did not believe in any mediatory role of any individual.

"The invitation from the Centre will be discussed by the Hurriyat Conference executive and after that a stand will be taken by the conglomerate," Ansari said while maintaining that the amalgam was in favour of holding talks.

"We favour talks but it should be oriented towards resolution of Kashmir issue and nothing less," he said.

The reaction came from Ansari in the wake of Sayeed's demand for the appointment of a special emissary for holding talks with the separatist groups who had not met the Centre's interlocutor N N Vohra.
