US should have remained in its limits: India
Wednesday, October 15 2003 20:46 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: India on October 15 termed as "thinly disguised" and "unwarranted" United States' reference
to it while reacting to Pakistani missile test and said Washington should have confined its comment to
Islamabad's action.
"We are surprised at the manner in which the US State Department spokesman has chosen to respond
to a question on the Pakistani missile test," External Affairs Ministry spokesman said when he was asked
about it.
"He (US spokesman) ought to have confined himself to reacting to the Pakistani missile test, rather than
clutter up what he had to say by thinly disguised unwarranted references to India," the MEA spokesman
said.
US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher had said in Washington, "We urge Pakistan and
other countries in the region to take steps to restrain their nuclear weapon and missile programmes,
including no operational deployment of nuclear-armed ballistic missiles."
Observing that both India and Pakistan had test launched missiles earlier too, Boucher said Washington
had encouraged them to begin a dialogue on confidence building measures to reduce the likelihood that
nuclear weapons would ever be used.
"Both sides have tested missiles...each side has the same obligations," Boucher said.
