Patna: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary, Pramod Mahajan, on October 16 said his party would consider its duty to be incomplete if a grand Ram Temple was not constructed at Ayodhya.

Mahajan asked Muslim organisations to give up claim to the disputed land following the findings of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) that spoke of a temple existing beneath the Babri Masjid.

Saying that a small Ram Temple already exists at Ayodhya, he observed, ''I don't think there is any room for dispute over the site as the ASI has found conclusive evidence of existence of a temple underneath the place where Babri Masjid once stood."

Mahajan was addressing party workers on the conclusion of the BJP's state council meeting in Patna, which elected Gopal Narain Singh as its new president.

Amid thunderous applause, Mahajan said that the BJP would not allow construction of a mosque where the makeshift Ram Temple exists, come what may.

The BJP general secretary requested the judiciary to pronounce its ruling regarding the dispute immediately so that an impressive temple could be constructed.

Saying that the BJP favoured uniform civil code and abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, Mahajan, however, said that the measure would require a larger consensus and two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament.

The day BJP attained the required strength, it would repeal Article 370 and enforce a uniform civil code, Mahajan said.
