New Delhi: Congress on October 17 demanded a ban on Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), saying the Sangh Parivar outfit had demonstrated that "it is an irresponsible and anti-social organisation".

Party spokesperson S Jaipal Reddy told reporters that time had come for imposition of ban on VHP.

"VHP has once again demonstrated that it is not only an absolutely irresponsible organisation, but anti- social too due to its antics and anti-social activities in the last one week. Time has come for imposition of ban on it," Reddy said.

Criticising Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani for supporting VHP, he said the outfit was an "overrated organisation" and what they were pursuing was in utter violation of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) agenda.

He assailed VHP leaders for threatening communal riots all over the country if they were not allowed to go on their way on Ayodhya issue and said the situation could be easily controlled if a ban was imposed on the organisation.
