Musharraf asks US to 'do more' for Indo-Pak talks
Friday, October 17 2003 22:32 Hrs (IST)
Putrajaya (Malaysia): Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on October 17 asked the United States
to "work harder" and "do more" for resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue, saying that the two countries
were "not moving forward" bilaterally.
"They (US) are doing their best, they are trying to facilitate or encourage but unfortunately the dialogue
has not started. So one feels that they (US) need to work harder, because bilaterally we are not moving
forward," he said when asked what role Washington could play in bringing India and Pakistan to the
negotiating table.
"So much more needs to be done to start the process of dialogue on all issues, especially the Kashmir
issue because we have fought wars on it. And the US has a role to play because bilateralism is not
functioning, so multilateralism or mediation or facilitation is required and the US had to do more," he told
a press conference on the sidelines of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) summit.
Asked about the present status of the peace initiative in the backdrop of the recent war of words at the
recent UN General Assembly session, Musharraf said it was high time that the two sides started the
dialogue process.
"That ultimately will lead to a peaceful resolution of all our disputes. Otherwise this tension will continue
to the detriment of both our countries and to the entire South Asian region," he said.
On whether the two countries could move ahead in areas such as trade keeping aside the Kashmir
issue, the Pakistani leader said, "I do not think that is possible."
