OIC backs Pak on JK; ignores India's peace bid
Friday, October 17 2003 19:48 Hrs (IST)

Putrajaya (Malaysia): In a highly one sided action, Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) on October 17 backed Pakistan to the hilt supporting the "right of self-determination" for people of Jammu and Kashmir and accused India of Human Rights violations there.

With Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in attendance, the 57-member Islamic nation grouping summit in Putrajaya adopted a resolution which completely ignored New Delhi's peace initiative and referred only to "ongoing efforts" of Pakistan to seek a peaceful resolution of Jammu and Kashmir dispute "through all possible means including substantive bilateral talks with India".

The resolution adopted at the conclusion of the two-day summit reaffirmed OIC's support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for their "legitimate right of self-determination by virtue of the UN resolution", considered by India as outdated.

It called for "respect of the Human Rights" of the Kashmiri people and the "ending of their continuous violations".

The Islamic body urged India to allow international Human Rights organisations to "verify the condition of Human Rights in Kashmir occupied by India."

"The Conference supported the ongoing efforts of the government of Pakistan to seek a peaceful resolution on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute through all possible means including substantive bilateral talks with India," the resolution said.

In this context, the grouping called for serious negotiations for a peaceful settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the will of the people of Jammu and Kashmir."

The Conference noted with appreciation Pakistan's offer of a ceasefire along the line of control (LoC) and the offer to encourage a general cessation of violence within Kashmir involving reciprocal obligations and restraints on Indian forces and the Kashmiri "freedom movement".

It expressed "concern" at the Indian "rejection" of the Pakistani action plan for peace in the region and called upon New Delhi to consider it.
