Former Union Minister arrested in Haryana
Monday, October 20 2003 20:27 Hrs (IST)

Hisar: Former Union Minister and Congress Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Jai Prakash was on October 20 arrested on charges of instigating rioting and dacoity in Haryana's Hisar district.

The former Union Deputy Minister was produced in a local court, which sent him to judicial custody till November 3.

A case was registered against him by the Barwala police on October 19 night under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) relating to rioting and dacoity after Indian National Lok Dal leader Surender Lamba complained that Jai Prakash instigated some people to take possession of a shop.

Claiming that he was the real owner of the shop, Lamba alleged that some people, stated to be supporters of Jai Prakash, forcibly entered the shop and threw out the belongings and injured his people present there.

Some nearby shopkeepers downed shutters following the incident, he alleged.

A police party, headed by two DSPs, went to the house of Jai Prakash in Jind and arrested him on October 20 morning.

The former Union Minister was produced before the judicial magistrate, who rejected the plea for his police remand and sent him to judicial custody till November 3.

Meanwhile, several Congress leaders condemned Jai Prakash's arrest alleging political vendetta.
