Colombo: Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom tonight (Oct 19) won another landslide victory to confirm his hold on power and rule the Indian Ocean archipelago for a sixth five year term.

According to election officials, out of 93,000 votes counted so far, Gayoom had secured 88.8 per cent, well above the 51 per cent mark needed to win the referendum to confirm his unanimous election by 50- member Majlis or Parliament.
