Thursday, October 23 2003 11:54 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: Railway authorities on October 23 said, breakage of wheel disc of one of the coaches has been found to be the prima facie cause of the Mysore-Bangalore passenger train accident that left five persons dead and 53 injured between Naganahalli and Pandavapur stations in Mandya district.

A detailed inquiry into the accident would be held by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore, a railway press release said.

Four rearmost coaches have been capsized and derailed, while relief and rescue operations were on in full swing, the statement said.

Railway officials said a relief train has been rushed to the accident spot from Mysore to ferry back the stranded passengers.

The railways announced cancellation of seven trains between Bangalore and Mysore and partially cancelled eight others.

The statement gave the names of four persons who died in the mishap as Syeed Tahseena, Asheena, Prabhamani and Suma.

Union Minister of State for Railways Basanagoud Patil Yatnal announced a compensation of Rs one lakh to those killed, Rs 25,000 to the seriously injured and Rs 5,000 for passengers who received minor injuries.
