HC to have internal talks before talking to Advani
Thursday, October 23 2003 17:47 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference on October 23 agreed in principle to hold talks with Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, its former chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said.

However, he said the amalgam would hold talks with other constituents of the Hurriyat as well as some separatist organisations outside the amalgam before holding talks with the Deputy Prime Minister.

"This exercise would enable us to build a consensus," he told reporters after an emergency meeting of Hurriyat Conference to discuss the Centre's announcement that Advani would be meeting Hurriyat chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari.

Another former chairman Abdul Gani Bhat told reporters that dialogue was the only way to resolve the Kashmir issue.

"APHC has decided to procure a broader consensus. We will be talking to pro-movement organisations inside as well as outside the Hurriyat," he told reporters after an hour-long meeting of the executive.

In a bid to woo back the split constituents, Bhat appealed to all political elements who had revolted against the Hurriyat leadership to come back and be united.

"I hope all of them will get back...let us bury the past, capture today and build a brighter tomorrow," he said while referring to the formation of a parallel conglomerate by Jamaat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
