India, Oman to encourage ties in energy sector
Thursday, October 23 2003 14:39 Hrs (IST)

Dubai: India and Oman have decided to bolster bilateral co-operation in the energy sector by setting up more joint ventures like the fertiliser project in the Omani gas fields of Sur, as well as initiating Information technology (IT) projects by India in the Sultanate.

The decision was taken at the fourth Indo-Oman Joint Commission meeting, which ended in Muscat on October 22. The minutes of the meeting were signed by Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, Omani Minister of Commerce and Industry, and S B Mukherjee, Indian Minister of State for Commerce and Industry.

Maqbool said the commission explored the possibility of establishing joint ventures in energy sector in Oman or India, adding similar projects already existed like the fertiliser plant in Sur and a refinery in India.

He said the two sides also discussed establishing IT operations by the Indian IT companies in Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM) and training Omanis in IT centres in India.
