New Delhi: An ordinance to amend the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) to confer statutory powers
on POTA Review Committees is expected to be promulgated in a
day or two, official sources said in New Delhi on October 25.
This follows the arrival of President A P J Abdul Kalam from a weeklong three-nation tour.
"With the arrival of the President, the ordinance is likely to be promulgated in a day or two," the sources
said.
The Union Cabinet on October 21 had approved an ordinance giving statutory powers to the POTA
Review Committees and decided to introduce a bill to replace the ordinance in the winter session of
Parliament.
While a three-member Central Review Committee is headed by Justice Arun Saharya, states could also
set up such committees to deal with complaints lodged by those charged
with POTA.
