Sunday, October 26 2003 15:23 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: Five militants were killed in two gunfights with security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir since October 25, a defence spokesman said on October 26.

Four militants were killed in forests of Surigam in Kupawara district in an encounter while one terrorist was killed in an operation in adjoining Handwara area.

Meanwhile, targeting fencing work at the borders, Pakistani troops shelled areas along the Line of Control for the ninth consecutive day injuring two civilians in Rajouri-Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mortar shells fired from across the border landed on areas where fencing was on besides forward locations and civilian pockets, official sources said.

Two civilians were injured in the shelling in Noushera sector, they said.

Indian troops retaliated as Pakistani shells hit Hawani, Laam, Kalisan, Jhangar, Kerni, Balakote, Jallas, Calanoi, Kalal, Chowki Chora and Rumlidhaara areas.

Intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides was also reported from along the International Border in Jammu district.

Five people have been killed and 19 injured in shelling by Pakistani troops in the past one week.
