New Delhi: In a major step to counter the menace of militants using improvised explosive devices (IEDs)
in Jammu and Kashmir, Army has inducted a number of advanced jammers from abroad and its senior
officers are confident that movement of military and civilian convoys on highways and other roads would
henceforth be less dangerous.
"A fair number of advanced jammers have been inducted in the militancy-hit state as part of new
measures to contend with increasing use of IEDs by the militants," Major General B S Dhaliwal told
reporters on the upcoming bi-centenary celebration of the famous Bengal Sappers.
Another top officer Brig Gautam Banerjee, Commandant of the Bengal Engineering Group Centre at
Roorkee, said terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir including Pakistani mercenaries were using highly
advanced material in setting up booby traps on roads and culverts.
On de-mining, the senior Sapper officers said Indian Army had laid double the number of mines during
Operation Parakram than in 1971 war with Pakistan and their de-mining process would be completed
within the next three to four months.
