Mumbai: Hearing the plea of Iqbal Kaskar, younger brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and
accused in a land-grabbing case, a Special Court on October 28 directed the jailor of central prison to
file a report on November 1 on food facilities provided to inmates during Ramzan.
In a related development, the court deferred till November 5 Iqbal's bail plea as public prosecutor Rohini
Salian sought time to file reply.
Kaskar urged for special food during Ramzan. He sought permission to allow him partake milk, butter,
cornflakes, bread, bakery and fruits for Iftaar. The court asked the jailor to state whether jail manual
permitted such food.
This is for the first time Iqbal has sought bail from the Special Court since his arrest under Maharashtra
Control of Organised Crime Act on March 19.
Iqbal's lawyer Sham Keswani pleaded that the police had not made out any case against his client and
urged for his bail on the ground that MCOCA was not applicable to him.
Meanwhile, the court has remanded him and two others to judicial custody till November 5.
Iqbal was arrested under MCOCA after he was deported from Dubai. He is facing the charges of
channelising funds of the underworld into the real estate in Mumbai.
Iqbal and his associates had developed Sara Business Centre and Sahara Shopping Complex in South
Mumbai allegedly with underworld money. These shopping complexes were illegal and have been
attached by the court in an interim measure.
According to police, Dawood had pumped a lot of money into the real estate in Mumbai by purchasing
old buildings and converting them into multiplexes.
