Balasore: Brahmos, the supersonic anti-ship cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia, was
on October 29 successfully flight tested from the Interim Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near Balasore,
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sources said.
Brahmos has a target range of 290 kms, with capability to carry 200 to 300 kg payload of conventional
warhead mass.
It can be fired from multiple platforms, which include ship, land, submarine and air, DRDO sources said.
Though primarily an anti-ship missile, Brahmos also had the capability to engage shore-based radio-
contrast target, they said.
"It was a wonderful test-flight. This flight was intended to evaluate the precision guidance system and
improved fire control system," Dr A S Pillai, chief controller, DRDO, said.
President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam and Defence Minister George Fernandes congratulated the scientists
on the successful test firing of the missile, the sources said.
