Karnal: Prince Charles today (Oct 31) got a glimpse of India's rural life when he visited village Kutail Gamri near Karnal, and was "highly impressed".

The heir to the British throne mingled freely with the villagers, who accorded him a warm welcome, and spoke to them through interpreters.

He inaugurated a 'Chaupal' and was offered a turban by the village sarpanch. Though he shied away from donning it, the royal dignitary, however, gladly accepted the gift.

Charles, who is on a nine-day visit to the country, took a keen interest in the health facilities in the villages as he witnessed administering of polio drops to children at a camp.

He visited a number of projects, including self-help groups running embroidery and tailoring shops, adult education centres, midwife training centre, handicraft and soap-making centres.

The Prince also visited the founder of Arpana Ashram.

Later, his press secretary told reporters that the Prince was highly impressed with the projects and pleased with the opportunity to mingle with the rural people.

He was accompanied by British High Commissioner Michael Arthur and his wife Plexy.

Tight security arrangements had been made for the visit.
