Goods train derails as militants set off bomb

Guwahati: United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) militants exploded a powerful bomb on the railway
track derailing the engine and four bogies of a goods train injuring its two drivers, one of them seriously,
near Dangtol station in lower Assam's Bongaigaon district on October 31.
The Bongaigaon Superintendent of Police, Rounak Hazarika told reporters that the Improvised Explosive
Device (IED) was detonated under the train while it was coming from Bongaigaon to New Guwahati
station.
The explosion took place around 10.55 PM (IST) causing the train to jump the tracks and block the
movements of trains, he said.
Railway sources said that the driver of the train, Niranjan Chakraborty, based in Alipurduar, was
seriously injured while assistant driver Jyotish Sharma was also wounded.
The sources said the accident relief trains from Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri have rushed to the
spot.
The goods train was carrying onions and Amul products.
Meanwhile, Howrah bound Saraighat express, Avadh mail to Delhi and Kanchanjunga to Sealdah
alongwith other trains have been controlled at various points.
Departure of morning trains was likely to be affected due to damage of the tracks, the railway sources
said.
